What happens when that daughter whom you loved more than your own child becomes your biggest enemy? How did a sacred father-daughter relationship turn into the dirtiest controversy in the history of Bollywood? And why is their own biological daughter Shreya Pilgaonkar having to pay the price today for this horrific mistake made three decades ago?Friends, in this glittering world of Bollywood, what you see is often not the complete truth. And the truth that exists is so bitter that it is not within the capacity of a common person to digest it. Today we are going to turn the pages of one such story which started with a very emotional and beautiful relationship, but whose end was so terrible that it robbed an entire family of its sleep.
This story is not a script of a film, but it is the biggest and darkest truth of the life of that legendary artist of Indian cinema whom the whole world knows by the name of Sachin Pilgaonkar. To understand the roots of this entire saga, we have to go back to that era when Sachin Pilgaonkar was standing at that pinnacle of success where reaching is not within everyone’s reach. At the tender age of just 4 years, when children learn to speak and play with toys, Sachin started his film journey with the Marathi film ‘Ha Maza Marg Ekla’. The magic of that innocence and acting was such that he got the National Award for Best Child Artist and the country’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru himself lifted this little artist in his lap and honoured him. The journey that started from that day did not stop.
Moving out of that phase of childhood, when Sachin reached the threshold of youth, he achieved that position in Hindi cinema which is still considered a milestone today. Whether it was the innocent Ahmed of Sholay or the simple Chandan of Nadiya Ke Paar, Sachin breathed his soul into every character. There was no dearth of fame, wealth and respect for Sachin, who ruled over Hindi, Marathi and Bhojpuri cinema. But the real colour of life blossomed when in the year 1984, on the set of the Marathi film Navri Mile Navryala, his eyes fell on the very beautiful and innocent Supriya Sabnis. This love that blossomed between 27-year-old Sachin and just 16-17-year-old Supriya was tied into a beautiful bond of marriage in the very next year, i.e. in 1985. Success was kissing Sachin’s feet and their married life was passing like a beautiful dream. But how strange is the philosophy of fate that it does not bestow a complete world on anyone. Even after many years of marriage, the giggling of a small child did not echo in the courtyard of that big and luxurious bungalow. In the outside world there was thunderous applause.
But within the four walls, a deep, piercing silence floated. In that era, Sachin had a very close friend named Kuldeep Makhani, whom many people also know by the name of Rajiv Makhija. Rajiv used to handle a restaurant business in London and his dreams were also very high like Sachin’s. Both friends thought of creating a stir in the world of film production together and laid the foundation of a production company named Kittu Films. But it has been the custom of this dream city that here as colourful as the night is, the morning can prove to be equally ruthless. Suddenly such a loss occurred in business that Kittu Films kept sinking into the deep swamp of debt. The pressure of creditors and the fear of bankruptcy increased so much that Rajiv Makhija had no option left except to leave India and flee to London. But in the midst of this chaos and rush, Rajiv left behind his 3-year-old innocent daughter Karishma. Karishma’s mother was very ill and helpless in London. And Rajiv was preparing to leave his own little daughter in some stranger hostel like an orphan. When this news reached the ears of Sachin and Supriya, their sensitive heart trembled from within. How could a house which itself was yearning for a child let a friend’s 3-year-old innocent girl rot in the rooms of a hostel. Without wasting a single moment, Sachin and Supriya decided that they would bring Karishma to their home and raise her close to their chest like their own child. But right here they made the biggest, most fatal mistake of their life. Swept away in the flood of emotions, they did adopt Karishma, but they never went to the court of law to get any legal adoption done. No court stamp was put, no signatures were made on any government paper. This relationship was completely standing on the raw thread of emotions, trust and humanity. In the initial days, everything seemed magical like a fairy tale.
When the footsteps and laughter of little Karishma echoed in the deserted bungalow, Sachin and Supriya felt as if God had given them everything. Sachin bestowed every luxury on this beloved like a princess. Not only that, he also launched this little fairy on screen in his home production film Aatmavishwas under the name of Baby Karishma. In that era, film magazines started praising the generosity of Sachin and Supriya. In between this period, on 25th April 1989, another big miracle happened in the Pilgaonkar family. Supriya gave birth to her biological daughter Shreya Pilgaonkar. Now there were two daughters in the house. One whom they had adopted from the heart and the other who was a part of their own blood. For Sachin and Supriya, this was the pinnacle of happiness. But as is often seen in families, a new birth sowed such seeds of insecurity and comparison under that roof which with time were going to become a poisonous tree.In that era of print media, journalists without any legal verification started writing that Sachin Pilgaonkar has legally adopted Karishma. In the minds of the public, it got ingrained like a line carved on stone that Karishma is his adopted daughter. Everything was going fine. But in the early years of the 90s, suddenly such a storm came which blew the senses of this entire family. Suddenly from London, Karishma’s biological father Rajiv Makhija returned, whom Sachin had once considered like his own brother. One day without any information, without any long conversation and without any consent, Rajiv took his daughter Karishma from Sachin’s house and left for London.
When Sachin and Supriya returned home, the bed was empty. Toys were scattered and the child whom they had made a piece of their heart was missing. This was not an ordinary separation. This was like stabbing directly into Sachin’s self-respect and his emotions. How could a father who had left his child helpless suddenly come and snatch her away in a jolt? In anger, helplessness and yearning, Sachin took such a step that shook the entire film industry. He directly filed a kidnapping case against his own friend and Karishma’s biological father. This news spread like wildfire throughout Bollywood that a superstar has accused a biological father of kidnapping his own daughter. But the court of law does not run on emotions but on arguments and documents. When this case reached the threshold of the court, the ground slipped from under Sachin’s feet. Karishma’s father made it clear that Sachin does not have any legal adoption papers for the child. And when the child’s own statements told the court that no kidnapping had happened at all. Karishma had gone with her biological father of her own free will. So in front of the court, Sachin’s lawsuit shattered like a house of cards. He had not only lost that legal battle. But even more than that, he lost that battle of motherly love which he had nurtured for years. He tried to hide this deep wound from the eyes of the world and devoted himself to the upbringing of his own daughter Shreya.
Time passed at its own pace. On the streets of London, Karishma was growing young and here in the studios of Mumbai, Sachin again got busy with his work. 12 long years passed. No phone call, no letter, no contact. It seemed as if that past was over forever like a bad dream. But the games of destiny were still remaining. In the 2000s, after a long silence of almost 12 years, Karishma Makhani once again set foot on the soil of Mumbai. She was no longer a little girl. Rather she had a dream of becoming a heroine in Bollywood in her eyes. And see the surprise that the same doorstep which was left 12 years ago, in search of fame, Karishma rang the bell of the same doorstep again. She directly reached Sachin and Supriya’s house.Sachin and Supriya could have closed the door at that very moment if they wanted. But once again they kept regard for humanity and the old relationship. They gave shelter to Karishma in their house. Karishma stayed under the same roof for almost 6 months. Sachin tried to show her ways to gain a foothold in the industry. But this world of Bollywood does not run only on someone’s name. Here you have to prove your own capability. Karishma’s auditions failed. She could not get that big break which she was hoping for and slowly her disappointment started turning into bitterness.Karishma started feeling that the entire attention of the family is only on their biological daughter Shreya. She started feeling uncomfortable with Shreya and the feeling deepened in her heart that there was never any affection for her in this house. When this poison of failure increased beyond limits, Karishma packed her bags after 6 months and returned to London. But this time she left behind such a storm that put Sachin’s entire life’s reputation at stake. As soon as she reached London, Karishma came in front of the media and fired such cannons of statements against the family that the entire industry was stunned. She made very serious and personal allegations against Sachin and Supriya in interviews.
Karishma’s most stinging allegation was that Sachin and Supriya never adopted her from the heart but only pretended to be generous in front of the world. She claimed that even in childhood she was repeatedly made to feel that she is an outsider and even her father did not do any kidnapping but Sachin and Supriya themselves had pushed her and told her to leave the house. Not only that, in the year 2005 when Sachin and Supriya won the first season of the famous dance reality show Nach Baliye. Karishma also tried to tarnish that victory. She openly alleged that Sachin and Supriya had publicized her false story throughout the show to gather public sympathy and votes. She said that that trophy of Nach Baliye was won by trading on her emotions. This statement threw that mud on Sachin’s spotless image which he had never expected even in his dreams. After these allegations, Sachin was put in the dock in the media. Sachin could have come on TV channels and shouted if he wanted. But for a long time he silently drank this gulp of defamation. He knew that there is no victory in this battle of media. Only respect gets torn to shreds. But inside, this fire was smoldering. A pain which had become an incurable wound. Finally in the year 2013 and after that in his autobiography ‘Hach Maza Marg’, Sachin removed that heavy stone kept on his chest. In the pages of this book, the truth of that era which he stated turned the whole side of the story. Sachin clearly wrote how Karishma’s father cheated him of crores in the name of friendship. Did heavy financial embezzlement in business and when the debt came on his head, he fled to London leaving his 3-year-old child.Sachin also mentioned in his book the mental torture that family gave him. He told that Karishma’s mother blackmailed him for years for only one paper signature. Sachin’s deepest pain was that the same child and her greedy family, whom he had placed on his eyelashes in a condition like an orphan, gave him this reward for his kindness that they levelled such heinous allegations of exploitation and melodrama on him.On the other hand, Sachin and Supriya’s own biological child Shreya Pilgaonkar, who has made her acting prowess heard from Shah Rukh Khan’s film Fan to the powerful character of Sweety Gupta in Mirzapur. Shreya never asked for work taking support of her parents’ name.
She gave auditions, sweated in theatre and made her own identity in Bollywood and OTT on the strength of her hard work. But in the meantime, suddenly this fake news started spreading like wildfire on the internet that Shreya Pilgaonkar is not actually the biological daughter of Sachin and Supriya at all. Rather she is the same adopted daughter. People asked cheap questions, dragged old allegations of Karishma and started asking Shreya for proof of blood relationship with her parents. When this mental torture crossed the limits of tolerance, then finally in April 2024, Shreya Pilgaonkar herself had to come in front of the camera and shatter this dirty rumour. She said in clear terms that this news is completely nonsense, false and fabricated. She clarified that she is the biological child of her parents. She has not been adopted by anyone. In a strict tone, she said that she has no need to flash her birth certificate on Instagram to convince the whole world. This was not just a statement. This was the pain of that daughter who was not able to understand why she is being asked to account for that sin or that mistake of which she was never a part. How social media murdered facts and rekindled the deepest wounds of a family.
This was a living and horrific proof of that.Today when we look back at this entire saga, many questions arise in the heart. Was Sachin Pilgaonkar’s biggest mistake that he decided not with his mind but with his heart after seeing a helpless child? Is the biggest weakness of a human that he considers relationships above papers and laws? Because if on that day Sachin had completed the paperwork, then perhaps Karishma’s father could never have snatched the child away suddenly in that way and nor would there have been a situation of such heinous allegations years later.Or was Karishma responsible for this entire ruin, who after failing in Bollywood lashed out at Sachin’s family. When a person’s dreams break, he often wants to blame his failure on those shoulders which once gave him support. This saga behind the curtains teaches us that no matter how sacred the emotions are, if they are not given the ambit of clear boundaries and legal protection, then one day they can become a noose around your own neck.
Now the decision is in your hands as to whom you consider right and whom wrong in this whole story? Did Sachin’s kindness itself become his biggest enemy or did ambition and greed destroy an entire family?
